The 2010-2011 Miss Tanzania and team.

people have started questioning on whether the coming miss Tanzania as a replacement  of the current Miss Tanzania, respectable Genevieve Emmanuel Mpangala,  will effectively take- over where Genevieve have left trying to bring back the dignity of the crown as it has been considered dirty by the majority for sometimes now.

The first ever, official Miss Tanzania Beauty contest was held in 1967 at the Kilimanjaro Hotel in Dar es Salaam, making Theresia Shayo the first to be crowned the Miss Tanzania thus holding the prestigious title.

Before that, in early 1960’s there were several beauty contests in different in parts of the country, but they did not capture public attention, nor did they reach national level.

After the first national contest which got a lot of public attention, the government banned the competition, in the same year on grounds that it was against the nations norms and culture.

In 1994, the government authorized the re-instatement of the beauty pageant, and the Miss Tanzania organizing committee, under Hashim Lundenga took the task of organizing the event.

Since 1994, when Aina Maeda won the title, to become the first ‘modern’ Miss Tanzania, the peagant has stand the test of time to be the most prestigious beauty contest in the country.

On top of the prestigious title the winners have always been given various expensive presents, including cars, cash prizes and off course the one and only chance to be Tanzanian ambassador in the Miss World pageant.

This year’s prize for the winner is a 53m/- Suzuki Grand Vitara, plus nine million cash prize, and off course, the winner must have won other great prizes in her zone and grassroots competition.

The establishment of the grassroots and zone levels of the competition was done to ensure that the competition has a more national look, and to make sure that every girl in the country is given the chance to throw her cards for the title.

So far Kinondoni zone has shown that it is the center of the beauty queens in the country since ifour of Miss Tanzania came from Kinondoni, making its contestants the most feared in the nationals.

On top of the expensive presents to the winners, holding the Miss Tanzania title has been a door opener to many girls participating in the event, many coming to hold important positions in different organizations.

For some they have secures different jobs, most holding public relations positions such as the 1994 first runner up, Tabasamu Ngongoseka, now known as Lucy Kiwele becoming a MultiChoice PRO while Shose Sinare become Head, Corporate Banking at Stanbic Bank Tanzania.

Moreover, it has also kick started other’s entrepreneurship activities, such as Irene Kiwia who was once Miss Temeke , and on Miss Tanzania’s top ten, has teamed up with 2005’s Miss Tanzania, running a national wide model search competition.

Miss Tanzania peagant has also proved to be the right place to begin modeling career, the most notable being Happiness ‘Millen’ Magesse, who is one of the top African models working in South Africa.

After years of trying in the Miss World and ending nowhere, the high time of the Miss Tanzania title came in 2005 when the beautiful Nancy Abraham Sumari, went on to become the first Miss World Africa, the glory that no other beauty queen has reached to date.

Miss Tanzania title holders also get involved in charity and social work for most of the time that the girl is the reigning queen. The most notable in charity activities being Hoyce Temu,Miss Tanzania 1999.
